Christmas in a Cabin: The Quiet Week on the Lake

TL;DR
  • The cabin sleeps 6 across 3 bedrooms, with a fireplace inside, a fire pit outside, and a full kitchen for the holiday cooking.
  • Shehawken Lake in Starrucca, PA is about 3 hours from NYC, close enough for a real Christmas week without a travel day.
  • Elk Mountain skiing is 30 minutes away, with night skiing and cheaper lift tickets bought online in advance.
  • Christmas and New Year’s weeks are the first winter weeks to book; if the idea lands, decide early.

There are two kinds of Christmas. The one where you host, which is the Thanksgiving problem all over again with more wrapping paper. And the one where you go somewhere small and warm with the handful of people you actually want in the room.

This post is about the second kind. The cabin takes one family per week, and in late December that week tends to look like this: snow on the gazebo, a lake going still and white out the big windows, a fire inside, and no schedule at all.

Why Christmas works here.

The Poconos region averages around 50 inches of snow a year, and up here in the northern corner, at about 1,300 feet, late December is when it usually starts sticking around. A white Christmas is never guaranteed anywhere in the Northeast, but the odds in Starrucca beat the odds in Brooklyn by a wide margin. Even a gray Christmas here comes with a frozen lake, bare woods, and the kind of quiet you cannot buy closer to the city.

The cabin itself was built for this exact week. A fireplace in the great room, a wall of windows facing the water, a dining area that seats everyone, and three bedrooms, two queens and a double, so six people sleep in actual beds. There is a sofa bed if a seventh insists.

What the week looks like.

Slow mornings with coffee by the fire. A ski day at Elk Mountain, which is 30 minutes south and runs night sessions if your crew prefers to sleep in. A drive to Honesdale for last-minute shopping and a Main Street that does December well. And evenings that are just dinner, the fire pit if the night is clear, and board games nobody admits to caring about until they are losing.

The cooking setup.

Christmas dinner needs a real kitchen, and this one is fully equipped and labeled, which matters more when you are managing a roast than when you are making sandwiches. There is a propane grill down toward the water for anyone who insists on cooking outside in December, and the propane stays stocked. Groceries are a planned stop on the drive in: Peck’s Market in Hancock, NY is 15 minutes from the cabin and covers everything short of the exotic stuff.

Getting here in December.

The drive from NYC is about 3 hours. In winter, take the interstates: I-80 to I-380 to I-81 gets plowed first and stays boring, which is what you want in snow. The scenic back-roads route is a three-season move. 4-wheel drive is helpful on the last stretch after a storm, not required. Check-in is a self-serve smartlock, so arriving at 10pm on the 23rd works exactly as well as arriving at 3 in the afternoon.

The booking reality

Christmas week and New Year’s week are the first winter weeks to go, usually well before the snow shows up in the forecast. One family per week. If the group chat is circling the idea, book before it finishes deliberating.

Nobody remembers the Christmas where the hosting went smoothly. People remember the one where it snowed on a lake and nobody had anywhere to be.
