Ski weekends at Shehawken Lake.

Three ski groups stayed at the cabin and reviewed. All five-star. All said the drive to Elk Mountain was worth it. Here’s what a ski weekend actually looks like from this base.

Ryan has a really beautiful cabin right on a lake. It was even nicer than the pictures and was absolutely spotless. Although it is in a remote location, Ryan gave very clear instructions and our stay was flawless. I appreciated that Ryan reached out before approving the rental to inform us of snow on the entrance road and to make sure that we had 4-wheel drive vehicles. He was extremely responsive and reached out numerous times during our stay to make sure everything was OK. We used the cabin for a ski weekend and it was about a 30-minute scenic drive to Elk Mountain. One caveat is there are not many restaurants nearby so you may want to bring food.

Cathedral-ceiling great room with stone fireplace at the cabin — typical après-ski setup after Elk Mountain
Where ski weekends end at 4pm.

Theodore stayed in February 2025 and described it perfectly: “a 30-minute scenic drive to Elk Mountain.” He came up with a group of friends, spent two days on the lifts, brought groceries because there’s no late-night takeout up here, and called it flawless.

The cabin has hosted three ski-weekend groups whose Airbnb reviews are public. One was a family of four (Brian, January 2025). Two were friend-groups (Theodore and Sarah, both February 2025). They all left five-star reviews. This is what a ski weekend at the cabin actually looks like, and what to expect.

Why a cabin beats a lodge.

The Elk Mountain options for lodging are: 1) the slope-side accommodations at the resort, which are limited and uneven; 2) chain hotels in Carbondale or Scranton, 30-45 minutes from the mountain; 3) cabin rentals on the surrounding lakes. A 3-bedroom cabin 30 minutes from Elk wins on three things at once: lower per-person cost than 3 hotel rooms, real space to spread out, and a great room with a fireplace where the day actually ends.

The mountain itself is one of Pennsylvania’s best-kept ski secrets — 27 trails, 1,000 vertical feet, real fall-line skiing, night skiing Thursday through Sunday. The full mountain breakdown is on the Elk Mountain area page.

What a ski weekend actually looks like.

Friday evening

Arrive late afternoon. The drive up from NYC or Philly is 3 hours. Bring food — groceries are a 15-minute drive to Hancock once you’re here, but it’s easier to stop in town on the way up. The cabin has a fireplace inside (firewood stocked) and a fire pit outside. Most ski weekends spend Friday night at the cabin, not at the mountain. The 4-person dining table works for cards, beer, and game-watching.

Had a great couple of days skiing with my sons. 4 of us at the cabin, great living space for us to watch the football games or play cards at the dinette. Beds very comfy — we all slept well!

Saturday

Up early. 7am coffee. Drive the 30 minutes to Elk Mountain by 8am for a full ski day on fresh corduroy. Ski until 3-4pm. Most groups skip après-ski at the mountain (limited options) and drive back to the cabin instead. Soak in the great room. Cook dinner. The night is for the fireplace.

Saturday night (the secret)

Elk runs night skiing Thursday through Sunday. The Saturday night session is the move: lift lines empty after 6pm, snow firms up, prices drop. If you skied a full day Saturday, you can come back for night-only and basically ski 1.5 days for the price of one. The 30-minute drive at 9pm under stars is part of the experience.

Sunday

Half-day at the mountain or a slow morning at the cabin. By Sunday afternoon, the ski-weekend rhythm is to be on the road by 2pm to beat the worst of the Sunday-night return traffic.

What to bring for a ski weekend.

Group size.

The cabin sleeps 6 comfortably. The sweet spot for a ski weekend is 4 adults or a family of 4-5. Six adults is doable but the bathroom is shared and the kitchen is sized for a family, not a fraternity. For larger ski groups, two cabin rentals on the surrounding lakes is the move — not this one.

Beautiful house with a great host!

Sarah’s review is short but she’s a 7-year Airbnb veteran who came with a group in February — the kind of guest whose shorthand carries weight. The longer reviews from Theodore and Brian fill in the picture.

Drive times for skiers.

Where to eat after skiing.

Most ski groups cook at the cabin for 2 of 3 dinners and go out once. The closest sit-down dinner is the Hancock House Hotel in Hancock, NY (35 min from Elk, 15 min from the cabin). For a longer dinner, Native in Honesdale is the best food in 40 miles — reservation required, especially weekends. Full breakdown in the food guide.

The ski-weekend honest part.

Two things to know

1. Elk Mountain’s après-ski scene is minimal. Don’t expect Vermont/Aspen vibes. The mountain has a base lodge with a cafeteria. That’s it. The point of a cabin rental is that your base IS the après. 2. The cabin is not a ski-in/ski-out. It’s a 30-minute drive each way from Elk. You’re committing to the drive in exchange for a much better evening.
